WANT TO MEET PEOPLE, GET FIT AND LOSE WEIGHT?
WANT TO LEARN A NEW SPORT?
WANT TO FIND OUT HOW GOOD YOU CAN BE?
WHY NOT TRY A LEA RC LEARN2ROW COURSE!
Lea RC has a strong tradition of nurturing athletes from the local community. The club does this in two equally important ways:
1. Junior Learn2Row
These sessions are designed to teach juniors aged between 11 and 18 all the skills they need so that they are able to row in the Junior novice sessions safely. The courses are open to any young person whether they have on water experience, training experience or are completely new to the sport. The sessions run on a Saturday between 1pm and 3pm and the course lasts for six weeks. By the end of the six weeks the coaches aim to have the participants confidently rowing in either fine singles or doubles.
Cost: The cost of this course is £20.
Coaching: In partnership with London Youth Rowing Lea RC’s Head Junior Coach Dan Cooper heads a dedicated team of qualified coaches and volunteers.
Progression from Learn2row: By the end of the course all participants should be able to row confidently in crew boats and will be able to take part in the junior training sessions which go on throughout the week. We have several junior groups based on each individual’s ability and commitment. Our top performing group is for those who want the chance to be the best in the UK training up to ten times a week.

2. Adult Learn2Row
SUMMERS FROM JULY TO SEPTEMBER FOR TEN WEEKS
Lea RC runs an adult Learn2row course for anyone age 18 and up. Each summer we have space for 112 beginners on the course. We run four separate groups which run parallel to one another. These are on Mondays (7-9pm), Wednesdays (7-9pm) and Saturdays (8-10am & 11-1pm). The course is structured as follows:
Module 1 – Introduction from Club Captain. Understanding of the boathouse, club rules, etiquette, safety and course structure. Basic understanding of parts of the boat. Introduction to rowing technique, an indoor rowing machine and correct stretching.
Module 2 – Coordination of basic rowing movements in an indoor rowing tank (London Regatta Centre, docklands).
Module 3 – Introduction to the training boats, safety and the water.
Module 4 – Indoor rower, stretching and water session.
Module 5 – Indoor rower, stretching and water session.
Module 6 – Indoor rower, stretching and water session.
Module 7 – Indoor rower, stretching and water session.
Module 8 – Indoor rower, stretching and water session.
Module 9 – Fine boat experience if opportunity permits.
Module 10 – Learn2row fun regatta in training boats.
Cost: The ten week course costs £100. This includes use of all the equipment, a trip to the indoor rowing tank in the docklands and coaching.
Coaching: All coaching at Lea RC is voluntary. However each Learn2row course will be led by a qualified coach with a number of experienced assistants from the club. This provides the correct level of supervision for all individuals on each course.
Contact and applications: To register your interest in a Learn2row course please email the club captain at captain@learc.org.uk. Your name and email address will be noted and all applicants will be emailed near the start time of each course with details and application forms. There is no payment required until the course begins.
Progression from Learn2row: As part of the Learn2row course beginners are welcome to join in with club circuits which are on Tuesday and Thursday evenings for the first four weeks of the rowing season in September. This is to provide beginners with a taster as to what novice training is like. From the end of September individuals from the Learn2row course are invited to take one of two paths:
-
Recreational rower: This is a relaxed way for people to enjoy the river, the club and rowing in general. The recreational group has its own boats and coaches and rows for a couple of hours on the weekend. Members of the recreational group are also welcome to use the gym but outside of main training hours. Recreational rowers will not look to compete at regattas.
-
Squad member: This is for the keener individual who wishes to row competitively. Individuals from the Learn2row course will form Men's and Women's novice squads which have their own coaches, training programmes and racing equipment. The novice squads will train in the same environment as the clubs senior rowers in the gym and on the water. The novice squads will form crews that will aim to compete through the year and then win their first regattas in the summer following the Learn2row course. In the following year individuals will move up to the senior squad and hopefully to national competition at major events such as Henley Royal Regatta.
